Puisa Kotha Hunibo? Credit score before marriage?

A few years ago, nobody spoke about credit scores outside banks. Today, it is entering our personal lives in a very real and interesting way. I’ve seen cases where, before finalising a marriage, families ask for the credit score of the groom. And in some situations, a low score has led to rejection. It may sound surprising, but it shows how seriously money habits are being viewed today.

A credit score is simply a number that shows how you have handled borrowed money. It usually ranges from 300 to 900. A higher score means you have been regular with repayments. A lower score raises doubts.

But there is a gap in this system. If you have never needed a loan or used credit, you may not have a score at all. You could be financially stable and disciplined, yet there is no record to show for it.

So does that mean you should take loans just to build a score? No. A better way is to start with controlled use of credit. A credit card can help. Use it for regular expenses, keep your spending within what you can repay, and always clear the full bill on time.

Another important factor is credit utilisation. Be mindful of how much of your credit limit you use. For example, if your limit is Rs. 1,00,000 and you are regularly spending close to that amount, it can negatively affect your score. Keeping usage moderate is a better approach. With consistency, your credit history builds on its own.

At the end, your credit score is a reflection of your financial habits. Think of it as your financial reputation. It tells others how responsibly you handle borrowed money. And very few of us have been exposed to such systems.

That is why we are building Moneybar. A space, online and offline, where people can understand money in a simple and practical way. Through workshops, seminars, and consultations, the goal is to move from confusion to clarity.
Because money will show up in every part of life, sometimes even in places you did not expect.
